Bethlehem Township Resident:

On September 6, 2007, the Governing Body adopted a new dog and cat licensing ordinance that will change the licensing process from the manner in which it has operated in years past.  The new ordinance allows township staff to better serve you because the new ordinance makes the new licensing procedures more clear and will give the staff greater flexibility to provide residents with additional services many of you requested, such as an annual reminder to renew dog and cat licenses.

The licensing fee for BOTH dogs and cats are $8 per spayed or neutered animal and $11 per intact animal.  As in previous years, all licenses must be renewed and obtained between January 1 and January 31 annually.  On the first day of every month thereafter, an additional late penalty of $5 will be assessed.  Beginning on September 1 until the end of the year, late penalties will be frozen at $55 per dog or cat.   All late fees must be paid in addition to the base licensing fee.

You may come in person to pay for your license or you may send the necessary documents and payment via mail.  In order to apply for a license or a renewal, please complete the application form for each dog/cat license, supply proof of rabies vaccination valid through November 1, 2008, include the appropriate fee(s), and enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope.  If you are paying by check, make checks payable to Bethlehem Township.  Please do not send cash in the mail.

As per the state statute, a municipal official will canvass each home in the municipality to take a census of dogs and cats in the township.  This census is conducted generally in the summer months.  Any individual found to be harboring an unlicensed dog or cat by the official will be fined $50 per unlicensed animal.

The new ordinance has a mandatory annual issuance of summonses for individuals who fail to comply with the licensing requirements after September 30.  Please be advised that a summons issued under the authority of this ordinance mandates appearance in court and carries a $33 court cost in addition to any and all previous accrued fees, a total cost of $96 per fixed animal and $99 and per intact animal.

We thank you in advance for your cooperation as we all grow accustomed to the new licensing procedures.  The ordinance will be accessible on the municipal website beginning in January.   If you have any questions regarding the new ordinance or the licensing procedures, please do not hesitate to contact municipal staff members.  Thank you.
